Emergency Water: Storage & Filtration

The human body can survive 3 weeks without food. Without water, you have 3 days — and cognitive impairment begins within hours of dehydration. Water is always your first priority.

How Much to Store

FEMA recommends 1 gallon per person per day minimum. For a 2-week supply for a family of 4, that's 56 gallons. Store more if you live in a hot climate, have active family members, or want to account for sanitation and cooking.

Storage Containers

  • Food-grade 5-gallon jugs — the gold standard. Blue-tinted, stackable, easy to transport.

Water Treatment for Storage

Water Filtration vs. Purification: Know the Difference

Filtration physically removes particles and microorganisms. Most filters remove bacteria and protozoa (Giardia, Cryptosporidium) but NOT viruses. In North American backcountry, this is usually sufficient. In disaster scenarios with sewage contamination or international settings, it is not.

Purification kills or neutralizes pathogens. Methods include boiling (always works, requires fuel), chlorine dioxide tablets (kills everything including Cryptosporidium — allow 30 min to 4 hours), and UV light (fast, effective against viruses, requires clear water and batteries).

The Professional Standard: Both

  1. Pre-filter through cloth to remove sediment
  2. Filter through a hollow-fiber filter (removes bacteria, protozoa, sediment)
  3. Purify with a chlorine dioxide tablet (kills viruses, handles anything the filter missed)

This two-stage approach handles virtually any water source. For your kit: carry a personal straw filter and chlorine dioxide tablets. For home base, a gravity filter handles volume without effort.

Building a 30-Day Emergency Food Supply on Any Budget

You don't need expensive freeze-dried kits to build a solid emergency food supply. A month of emergency food for one person can be assembled for under using foods from any grocery store.

  • Dried beans and lentils — protein and calories, 25-year shelf life, pennies per serving.
  • Rolled oats — fast to cook, high calorie density, 25-year shelf life sealed.

Emergency Food Shelf Life: The Real Numbers

Shelf life has two definitions: safety shelf life (when it becomes unsafe) and quality shelf life (when taste and nutrition degrade). Companies advertise quality shelf life. Safety life is almost always longer.

Real-World Numbers

  • Freeze-dried foods: 25-30 years quality, longer for safety. Best long-term option.
  • Sealed grains and legumes (mylar + O2 absorbers): 25-30 years. White rice, hard wheat, dried beans.
  • Dehydrated foods: 5-25 years depending on product and moisture content.
  • Commercial canned goods: 2-5 years quality, often much longer for safety. High-acid foods (tomatoes, fruit) degrade faster.
  • MREs: 3-5 years at 70°F. Drops dramatically in heat — a hot car can age an MRE a year per summer.

The Four Enemies of Food Storage

Heat is the biggest factor — every 10-degree increase roughly halves shelf life. Store in your coolest interior room, not a garage or attic. Moisture triggers mold and bacteria. Light degrades nutrients and causes rancidity. Oxygen oxidizes fats and destroys vitamins — use oxygen absorbers in sealed containers.

Chapter 6

Emergency First Aid When Help Is Hours Away

Standard first aid training assumes professional help arrives in minutes. Wilderness and disaster medicine operates on a different assumption: help may be hours away, or may not come at all. These are the skills that bridge that gap.

Priority One: Stop Bleeding

Uncontrolled bleeding is the leading cause of preventable death in trauma. For extremity bleeding, apply a tourniquet 2-3 inches above the wound and tighten until bleeding stops. Write the time on the tourniquet. For wounds in the torso or areas where a tourniquet can't be applied, pack the wound firmly with hemostatic gauze and hold direct pressure for a minimum of 3 minutes.

Chapter 7

Trauma First Aid: 5 Skills That Save Lives

These five skills — taught to military medics and search and rescue teams — represent the highest-value interventions a prepared civilian can learn.

  1. Tourniquet application — 2-3 inches above wound, tighten until bleeding stops, mark time.
  2. Wound packing — for groin, armpit, neck wounds where tourniquets can't go. Pack tight with hemostatic gauze, hold 3-5 minutes of firm pressure.
  3. Chest seal application — any penetrating chest wound gets a vented chest seal immediately to prevent tension pneumothorax.
  4. Shock recognition — anxiety, pale skin, rapid heart rate (early); confusion, cold/clammy skin, dropping blood pressure (late). Keep warm, keep flat, stop bleeding, get to care fast.
  5. Airway management — unconscious patient's tongue blocks airway. Head-tilt chin-lift opens it. Recovery position drains fluid. Nasopharyngeal airway maintains opening.

Chapter 8

7 Fire-Starting Methods, Ranked by Survivalists

Fire is heat, light, water purification, food preparation, and morale all in one. Never carry just one ignition method.

  1. Butane lighter — fastest, most reliable in dry conditions. Fails when wet, windier, or at altitude. Always start here.
  2. Waterproof matches — redundant backup. Store with strike-anywhere heads in a waterproof case.
  3. Ferrocerium rod — works wet, works at altitude, lasts thousands of strikes. Requires practice and fine tinder. Learn to use it before you need it.
  4. Windproof torch lighter — works in wind where standard lighters fail. Heavier but worth it for coastal or elevated terrain.
  5. Magnesium block — shave magnesium into tinder pile, ignite with the attached ferro rod. Burns intensely hot even in damp conditions.
  6. Fire piston — compresses air to ignite char cloth. Fascinating to watch, impressive in demonstrations, not practical under stress.
  7. Friction fire (bow drill) — truly primitive, truly difficult. Takes months to master and extreme physical effort. A last resort, not a plan.

Carry 1, 2, and 3. The rest are interesting. Those three keep you alive.

Chapter 9

Cold Weather Survival: Staying Warm When the Heat Goes Out

Cold kills gradually and predictably — which means it's the most preventable disaster death. Understanding how your body loses heat tells you exactly how to stop it.

The Five Heat Loss Mechanisms

  • Radiation (40-60% of total loss) — your body radiating heat outward. Blocked by insulation.
  • Conduction — direct contact with cold surfaces. Insulate beneath you, not just above.
  • Convection — wind stripping heat away. A windproof outer layer stops this entirely.
  • Evaporation — wet skin and clothing lose heat 25x faster than dry. Never wear cotton in cold weather.
  • Respiration — exhaling warm air. Cover your face.

The Three-Layer System

Base layer — merino wool or synthetic. Wicks moisture away from skin. Never cotton. Mid layer — insulation (down or synthetic). Traps warm air. Outer layer — windproof and waterproof shell. Blocks convection and precipitation.

Indoor Heat-Loss Scenario

Close off all rooms except one. Insulate the floor with sleeping bags or foam. Cover windows with heavy blankets. Use body heat as your primary source — two people in a sleeping bag is more effective than most alternatives. Never use gas ovens or outdoor propane heaters indoors — carbon monoxide has no smell and kills without warning.

Navigation Without GPS: Map, Compass & Terrain

GPS fails. Phones die. Batteries drain. The ability to navigate with a topographic map and compass is a skill that never fails because it has no batteries.

The Essential Skills

  • Orient your map — use your compass to align north on the map with magnetic north. Now your map matches your surroundings.
  • Identify terrain features — ridgelines, valleys, summits, and water features are visible on topo maps and in real terrain. Learn to read contour lines.
  • Take a bearing — point your compass at your destination, read the bearing, then follow it by moving toward landmarks on that bearing.
  • Triangulate your position — take bearings to two or three known landmarks and draw those lines on your map. Where they cross is where you are.
  • Track distance — know your pace count. Most people take about 1,250 double-steps per mile on flat terrain.

Print your maps now. Download topographic maps of your area from USGS.gov for free and laminate the ones that cover your likely evacuation routes. A wet paper map is useless.

Chapter 11

Family Emergency Communication Plan

In virtually every major disaster, the first thing families lose is the ability to communicate. Cell towers overload, power goes out, everyone panics. The families that stay safe are the ones who planned before the crisis.

The Four Elements

  1. Out-of-area contact — one person outside your region who every family member calls or texts. Often easier to reach an aunt in Texas than your neighbor. Everyone memorizes this number — don't just store it in a phone.
  2. Meeting Point A — a specific, recognizable location near your home for local evacuations.
  3. Meeting Point B — a location outside your neighborhood if the area must be evacuated entirely.
  4. School plan — designate 2 authorized adults who can pick up your children, and make sure the school has current contact info for both.

Laminated Wallet Cards

Create one for every family member: all family cell numbers, out-of-area contact, meeting point addresses, insurance policy number, doctor's emergency line. A phone dying should never mean losing critical information.

Chapter 12

Power Outage Survival: When the Grid Goes Down

Extended power outages are the most common multi-day emergency most American families will face. The US experiences more outages than any other developed nation, and the frequency is increasing.

First 30 Minutes Checklist

  • Check your utility's outage map (bookmark it now)
  • Unplug major appliances to prevent surge damage
  • Keep refrigerator and freezer closed (fridge: safe 4 hrs; full freezer: safe 48 hrs)
  • Charge all phones and power banks immediately
  • Pull out your emergency kit

Food Safety Timeline

  • Refrigerator: safe 4 hours if kept closed
  • Full freezer: safe 48 hours if kept closed
  • Half-full freezer: safe 24 hours if kept closed

Anything above 40°F for more than 2 hours: discard. When in doubt, throw it out — food poisoning on top of a power outage is a medical emergency you don't want.

If disaster strikes while you're at work or running errands, your home bag does you zero good. Your car is often your first line of defense.

Three-Tier System

Tier 1 — Roadside (always): Jump starter, tire repair kit, road flares, basic tools, tow strap, work gloves.

Tier 2 — Stranded overnight: Water (1L+ per person), calorie bars (tolerate temperature extremes), emergency mylar blanket, headlamp, first aid kit, phone charger and power bank, -100 cash.

Tier 3 — Evacuation: 72-hour food supply per person, water filter, change of clothes per person, important documents in waterproof sleeve, paper maps of the region, N95 masks.

Temperature warning: A car in summer sun reaches 160°F. Store medications and food in a small cooler in the trunk. Rotate food and water every spring and fall.

Chapter 14

Natural Disasters by Region: What to Prepare For

A generic disaster kit is better than nothing. A location-specific kit is what gives your family a genuine advantage.

The decision to stay or go is the most consequential call you'll make in a disaster. Most people default to bugging out — leaving feels like action, like doing something. But the data consistently shows that sheltering in place is the safer choice in the majority of scenarios.

When to Bug In (Stay)

  • The hazard is outside (nuclear fallout, riots, pandemic, chemical spill that's being contained)
  • Roads are gridlocked or dangerous
  • You have vulnerable family members who can't travel safely
  • Your home is structurally sound and the threat isn't destroying infrastructure
  • You have adequate supplies to wait out the emergency

When to Bug Out (Go)

  • Mandatory evacuation order is in effect — always comply
  • Your home is at risk (wildfire approaching, flood zone, structural damage)
  • Utilities will be out for more than 2 weeks
  • Civil unrest threatens your neighborhood directly
  • You have a confirmed, better destination to go to

The golden rule: If you're going to leave, leave early. The first person to evacuate faces no traffic, open gas stations, and available hotel rooms. The last person faces gridlock, no fuel, and no shelter. When in doubt, go early.
